TECH, FIT, and MIND: Chris Cowgill

Chris Cowgill, a BES Digital Delivery Civil Lead at HDR, Inc., is a passionate civil engineer who has spent the last 25 years turning his drive for efficiency into meaningful impact across projects, teams, and technologies. From his early fascination with CAD to today’s large-scale site grading and infrastructure coordination, Chris is a hands-on problem solver, teacher, and mentor. In this interview, he dives into the evolution of his career, the power of Civil 3D, and the rhythms that keep him sharp—in and out of the office.

Career and Industry Evolution

Chris’s journey into the AEC world didn’t begin with engineering—but with a love for architecture and technology.

“As a kid, I wanted to be an architect,” he says. “But after working for one and then switching to an engineering firm in college, I realized efficiency and CAD were my real drivers.”

Self-taught in AutoCAD and later Civil 3D, Chris quickly found himself solving problems and automating workflows wherever he went. One pivotal moment?

“During spring break one year, I taught myself Eagle Point’s sewer modules. That project impressed the president of our company—and showed me the value of working smarter.”

Since those early days, the biggest change he’s seen is the computing power now available to civil engineers.

“When I started, we were still board drafting. College didn’t even teach CAD for civil—it was all manufacturing-focused. That’s hard to imagine now.”

As a BES Digital Delivery Civil Lead, Chris’s daily tasks are a blend of design, support, and strategy—site grading, pressure network design, helping others troubleshoot CAD issues, and teaching company-wide classes on Civil 3D and workflow standards. Even after recent carpal tunnel surgery, Chris continues to lend support.

“I go home 15 minutes earlier now, but I’m still available if someone gets stuck.”

TECH

Technology and Collaboration

One of the biggest enablers in Chris’s toolkit has been Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC).

“It’s a huge step up for collaboration. ACC aligns with how Windows file structures work, so it’s easier to collaborate across offices and even with outside companies.”

He’s seen firsthand how technology can turn a month-long task into a one-week win.

“In 2004, we were doing plan and profile drawings by hand. I figured out how to use a module we weren’t using—and got a full project out the door in a week. That was a game-changer.”

Today, Chris is constantly optimizing workflows and believes the industry is headed toward model-based construction over static PDF plans.

“That shift puts more pressure on model accuracy and efficiency, but it also excites me—it’s where the industry needs to go.”

And the tech that keeps him calm and focused throughout the day? Music. His playlist ranges from contemporary Christian to classic rock.

“When I’m stressed on a deadline, music helps me lock in and focus.”

FIT

Work-Life Balance and Focus

While Chris has a full plate at work, he maintains a steady rhythm at home.

“I walk three miles every day after work. It’s good for stress—even if my dogs don’t see it as optional.”

Though he misses playing hockey or soccer, hiking has become his go-to way to unplug.

“It forces me to take a break from technology. There’s no signal, and if I have my nose in my phone, I’ll trip over a root or twist an ankle. It’s a great way to reset.”

These simple routines ground Chris—and offer inspiration for other AEC professionals navigating demanding roles. Whether it’s a walk, a hike, or some fresh air, stepping away from screens can offer clarity and calm.

MIND

Mindset and Learning

Despite being deep in Civil 3D every day, Chris’s mindset is about more than just tools—it’s about teaching, sharing, and always learning.

“The most rewarding part of my job is helping others solve problems. When someone says thank you after I’ve helped them out, it makes me want to help the next person even more.”

His advice to others looking to grow in AEC?

“Join a user group. Be active in forums. Go to conferences and take the classes that interest you.” For Chris, sharing knowledge—no matter how small—is how you move the industry forward. “Even if it saves just a few seconds, that time adds up. And when you share that knowledge, others benefit too.”

He’s a reminder that innovation isn’t just about flashy tools—it’s about the mindset of always improving, always helping, and always staying curious.
