TECH, FIT, and MIND: Jamie Donovan

Jamie Donovan, a Civil Design Manager at Karamisheff Nagel, is part of a growing wave of AEC professionals redefining the intersection of engineering, software development, and design innovation. From his early days acing high school graphics classes to leading civil and software projects today, Jamie brings technical mastery and a passion for problem-solving to every challenge he tackles. In this interview, he shares his journey into AEC, the evolving role of technology, and the daily habits that keep him sharp and ready to innovate.

Career and Industry Evolution

Jamie’s entry into the AEC industry started earlier than most—with a clear spark during his first year of high school.

“First year of high school, easy A+ in graphics, and I’ve used CAD almost every day since.”

Since officially launching his career over 11 years ago, Jamie has navigated roles across civil, structural, and hydraulic engineering. His path has gradually expanded beyond traditional engineering into the world of AEC software development, spanning C#, C++, Autodesk SDKs, Python, and more.

Today, his work as a Civil Design Manager is multifaceted. Jamie oversees standards in software and design, manages projects, trains staff, and develops new software solutions—all while staying grounded in day-to-day design using Civil 3D.

Each day blends project meetings, training, and reviewing designs, but increasingly leans into custom tool development, reflecting a shift he sees industry-wide:

“Changing from 12d to Civil 3D—and seeing drafting and design merge in real-time—was a standout moment. No longer thinking about final outputs, but constantly evolving the project.”

That spirit of continuous improvement is part of what fuels Jamie’s passion for the field, especially when it comes to building and solving complex numerical problems.

TECH

Technology and Innovation

Jamie is most energized by the intersection of civil and software engineering—the space where deep technical challenges meet the tools that solve them.

“While I love normal civil engineering, it’s the software engineering in this industry that’s most exciting to me. I can find problems that don’t exist yet and solve them using advanced methods.”

He’s currently developing several tech solutions to enhance workflows, although many remain confidential. What’s clear is that technology has transformed not just how Jamie works, but how quickly he can adapt and lead.

One pivotal skill he developed early was learning project management software like Microsoft Project.

“Having a good knowledge of where every step of the task is—even when it wasn’t expected at the time—allowed me to move into project management earlier than my peers.”

FIT

Work-Life Balance and Focus

Despite the high-intensity demands of his role, Jamie thrives under pressure—a trait that’s helped him sharpen his problem-solving skills even in overwhelming conditions.

“I am a good example of handling stress. It forces me to find solutions and work faster.”

To maintain physical balance, he commits to at least 30 minutes of exercise a day—nothing extreme, but enough to keep the body and mind in sync.

A key tech tool that supports his fitness routine? His Apple Watch.

“Knowing how much energy I have used, and adjusting my eating accordingly, has helped.”

The data-driven approach aligns perfectly with Jamie’s engineering mindset—another example of how he uses technology not just at work, but in everyday life to optimize performance.

MIND

Mindset and Learning

Jamie’s career success stems in large part from a growth mindset: a constant drive to learn, question, and improve.

He credits platforms like Autodesk University as ongoing sources of inspiration, and emphasizes the importance of understanding the why behind the software we use, not just the how.

This mindset has shaped not only his technical skills, but his ability to pivot and lead across disciplines—from civil engineering to software development and project management.

Looking Ahead

Jamie Donovan represents a new wave of AEC professionals who blend rigorous engineering principles with forward-thinking software development, shaping the future of design and delivery. His career path is proof that the best innovations often come from those willing to ask hard questions, seek better ways, and dive deep into both the tools and theories behind our work.

His advice to fellow professionals?

“Actively learn and grow. Always ask yourself: Can this be done better? Watch Autodesk University. And learn the basics of computer science—understanding why software works makes using it so much easier.”
