TECH, FIT, and MIND: Stephen Walz

Stephen Walz, Corporate Digital Design Lead at HDR, has built a career at the intersection of technology and design. With over two decades in the AEC industry, his work has spanned architecture, civil and environmental engineering, BIM, visualization, and workflow automation. Now leading digital design initiatives at HDR, he focuses on integrating emerging technologies, optimizing workflows, and ensuring teams have the tools they need to succeed. In this interview, Stephen shares his insights on industry evolution, the impact of data-driven strategies, and how he stays balanced in a fast-paced profession.

Career and Industry Evolution

Stephen has been immersed in the AEC industry since 2003, witnessing major shifts from 2D drafting to 3D modeling and, more recently, the rise of data-driven design. His passion for architecture and design began in high school, where drafting classes sparked his interest and set him on a path toward AEC. Initially focused on architectural design, he later transitioned into civil and environmental engineering, where he spent 15 years in various design and management roles before stepping into his current leadership position.

“The most rewarding part of my job is helping our technologists and practitioners grow—providing them with guidance, tools, and opportunities to advance in their careers.”

For Stephen, the most fulfilling aspect of his work is empowering others. By providing insights, support, and the right tools, he helps his colleagues develop their skills and navigate their careers in an ever-changing industry. He also sees tremendous opportunity in the flexibility of AEC career paths, noting that professionals can carve their own niche as technology continues to evolve.

TECH

BIM and Technology Innovation

Looking to the future, Stephen sees data as the driving force behind the next wave of AEC advancements. With organizations and vendors focusing on data-enabling strategies, firms that embrace digital transformation will gain a competitive edge—particularly in AI-driven solutions. He believes that as data maturity increases, AI will play a pivotal role in automating design, collaboration, and project delivery.

“Organizations that build strong data maturity will be in the best position to leverage AI for design, collaboration, and project delivery.”

If he could create a new tech tool to enhance workflows, it would be an AI-powered assistant that drafts communications, documents, spreadsheets, and presentations—allowing professionals to focus more on strategy and innovation. His enthusiasm for emerging technology is reflected in his hands-on approach to exploring creative ways to integrate AI and automation into daily processes.

FIT

Work-Life Balance and Focus

With a demanding role, Stephen prioritizes maintaining a balance between work and personal well-being. He starts his day by reviewing emails and his schedule, then closes his laptop to focus on a morning workout. This routine allows him to mentally map out his priorities, think creatively, and approach his work with clarity.

“I start my mornings by checking emails and my schedule—then I shut the laptop and work out. It helps me set priorities, think creatively, and start the day with the right mindset.”

Outside of work, Stephen and his family are amusement park enthusiasts, frequently visiting parks in the Carolinas and Florida. Beyond the rides, he enjoys the immersive environments, themed landscapes, and unique experiences, which provide a much-needed break from the digital world while keeping him active.

MIND

To enhance productivity, Stephen has also embraced smart technology. His recent investment in Ray-Ban Meta Glasses has been a game-changer, allowing him to take hands-free calls, listen to music (90’s and early 2000’s alternative and punk rock), and instantly access information without distractions.

“My Ray-Ban Meta Glasses have been a game-changer. Hands-free calls, music (90’s and early 2000’s alternative and punk rock), and instant access to information keep me focused and reduce distractions throughout the day.”

Looking Ahead

Stephen Walz’s career has been shaped by adaptability, innovation, and a passion for digital transformation in AEC. From the early days of CAD drafting to leading AI-driven initiatives, he sees data as the key to the industry’s next evolution. He believes organizations that embrace data maturity will be best positioned for the future, with AI streamlining workflows and enhancing design collaboration. Outside of work, Stephen maintains balance through fitness, family time, and smart tech that keeps him productive. As AEC continues to evolve, his focus remains on pushing innovation forward while empowering the next generation of digital design professionals.
